Masonry across Greater Moncton

We work in Moncton, Dieppe and Riverview and the communities around them, from Shediac and Cap-Pelé on the coast to Salisbury and Hillsborough inland. Building ages and conditions vary a lot across the region, and so do the repairs.

Street of houses with brick and stone fronts in a Greater Moncton neighbourhood

Moncton

Moncton has the widest range of masonry in the region. Downtown and the older neighbourhoods around it have solid brick commercial buildings, churches and century homes, many with original soft brick and lime mortar, along with fieldstone and rubble foundations under older wood-frame houses. Newer areas on the north and west sides have brick-veneer fronts, stone accents and poured foundations.

Common calls: repointing older brick, replacing spalled brick where earlier cement repairs have done damage, chimney crowns and rebuilds on older houses, and parging on poured and block foundations.

Dieppe

Dieppe has grown quickly, and much of its housing is from recent decades: brick and stone veneer on front elevations, garages and entries, over poured concrete foundations. Newer masonry has its own problems, mostly from installation: veneer run too close to the ground or the driveway, missing weep screeds, and parging that was applied in one thick coat and is now coming away.

Common calls: foundation parging, stone veneer repairs and new stone fronts, and replacing salt-damaged brick near driveways and steps.

Riverview

Across the Petitcodiac, Riverview is mostly residential, with a mix of mid-century brick homes and newer subdivisions. Many lots slope toward the river, which means retaining walls, drainage issues and foundations that take a lot of runoff.

Common calls: retaining wall repair and new walls, repointing on older brick bungalows, parging, chimney repairs and stone steps.

Shediac and the coast

Shediac, Pointe-du-Chêne, Grand-Barachois and Cap-Pelé sit on the Northumberland Strait. Salt air and exposure to wind off the water are hard on mortar, chimneys and brick. Many cottages and seasonal homes have chimneys and foundations that haven’t been looked at in years.

Common calls: chimney crowns and repointing, chimney removal on unused stacks, foundation parging on cottages, and stone patios and steps.

Salisbury, Lutes Mountain and Berry Mills

West of Moncton along the Trans-Canada, these areas mix village homes, rural properties and older farmhouses. Older houses here often have fieldstone foundations and brick chimneys; newer homes on larger lots often want stone fronts, steps and landscape walls.

Common calls: stone foundation repointing, chimney rebuilds, retaining walls and stone steps.

Irishtown and Lakeville

North of the city, these are mostly residential properties on larger lots. Typical work is foundation parging, stone veneer, chimney repair and landscape walls.

Memramcook and Hillsborough

Both have older housing stock and historic stone and brick buildings. Older masonry here especially benefits from lime mortar repairs rather than hard cement patches.

Common calls: stone and brick repointing, fieldstone foundations and chimney work on older homes.
